Evergreen Apothecary Wild Yam Tallow is a topical cream combining wild yam root (Dioscorea villosa) and clary sage in a tallow (rendered beef fat) base, positioned for hormone balance and endogenous progesterone production. The core marketing claim — that wild yam encourages the body's own progesterone production — is a well-documented myth. Diosgenin, the sapogenin in wild yam, is a starting material used in INDUSTRIAL LABORATORY synthesis of progesterone (Marker degradation, 1940s pharmaceutical chemistry), but the human body cannot perform this multi-step chemical conversion. Diosgenin ingested or applied topically is NOT converted to progesterone in vivo (Komesaroff 2001 Climacteric randomized 23 postmenopausal women to topical wild yam cream vs placebo for 3 months and found NO change in progesterone, estradiol, FSH, LH, lipids, or symptom scores). The 'natural progesterone production' claim is unverified_medical_claim regardless of the product's other qualities. The topical tallow-plus-botanical formulation itself is not harmful, but the mechanism it claims to enact does not occur.
