White peony root (Bai Shao) is a foundational herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine, particularly in women's formulas and as a component of the classic combination with licorice (Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang) for muscle spasm and menstrual cramps. Traditional formula evidence is stronger than monotherapy evidence. Small trials of the peony-licorice combination in polycystic ovary syndrome (Takahashi 1994) and muscle cramps show benefit.
