Seaweed (kelp, kombu, wakame, nori, etc.) is a legitimate iodine source and provides trace minerals. But iodine content in commercial kelp products is famously variable and often excessive: US FDA analysis found some kelp supplements contain 500-3000% of the RDA per capsule, and this can cause iodine-induced hyperthyroidism (Jod-Basedow phenomenon), especially in people with autonomous thyroid nodules. Zava et al. (2011) documented multiple case reports of kelp-induced thyrotoxicosis. Additionally, some seaweeds concentrate arsenic (particularly hijiki, which has documented inorganic arsenic content exceeding safe intake limits). This SKU is generic 'seaweed compound vitamin' with no species disclosure, no iodine content per cap, and no arsenic testing. 'Compound Vitamin' implies co-formulated vitamins that are undisclosed. Standard 48/100: seaweed is a real ingredient with real (mainly iodine) nutritional value, but the variability and safety concerns push this near the Rejected threshold. Iodine supplementation should be dose-calibrated, not consumed via undisclosed kelp products.
The Vyvata score's Evidence dimension measures the quality of published RCT support for a product's active ingredients at the label dose. Our source hierarchy: double-blind RCTs in MEDLINE-indexed journals > single-blind RCTs > open-label trials > observational studies > mechanism papers > N=1 case studies (anecdotes). Predatory journals and manufacturer-authored studies without independent replication are weighted down.
Product-specific evidence citations for this item are embedded in the analysis text on the "Analysis" tab. For the full framework and evidence hierarchy, see the methodology page.

Every VSF-related metafield surfaced verbatim. Nothing hidden. If you spot data that looks wrong, let us know.
Every score is set from the published rubric, audit-logged, and rescored whenever new evidence emerges (published trials, updated labels, third-party testing releases). Every vendor is scored on the same criteria — no pay-to-play. See our editorial-independence disclosure for the full policy, including brands with an editorial relationship to this site.
