Potassium citrate is an FDA-approved prescription drug (Urocit-K) for renal tubular acidosis and calcium-oxalate kidney stone prevention, and an over-the-counter supplement for general potassium repletion. Dietary potassium intake in the US averages 2,400-2,800 mg/day against an Adequate Intake of 3,400 mg (men) / 2,600 mg (women), so mild insufficiency is genuinely common. Evidence for supplemental potassium citrate is strongest for reducing recurrent calcium-oxalate stones (Ettinger 1997, Barcelo 1993) and for modest blood pressure reductions in salt-sensitive hypertension. The citrate anion alkalinizes urine and may reduce bone resorption, though the bone-density claim is not fully settled. The FDA restricts OTC potassium supplements to 99 mg per tablet as a safety measure — dietary insufficiency at this dose requires many capsules per day to close the gap. Bulkessentials should disclose exact mg elemental potassium per capsule, citrate salt vs other forms, and per-lot COAs. Scored Standard: a legitimate, well-characterized mineral supplement with specific evidence-based use cases.
The Vyvata score's Evidence dimension measures the quality of published RCT support for a product's active ingredients at the label dose. Our source hierarchy: double-blind RCTs in MEDLINE-indexed journals > single-blind RCTs > open-label trials > observational studies > mechanism papers > N=1 case studies (anecdotes). Predatory journals and manufacturer-authored studies without independent replication are weighted down.
Product-specific evidence citations for this item are embedded in the analysis text on the "Analysis" tab. For the full framework and evidence hierarchy, see the methodology page.

Every VSF-related metafield surfaced verbatim. Nothing hidden. If you spot data that looks wrong, let us know.
Every score is set from the published rubric, audit-logged, and rescored whenever new evidence emerges (published trials, updated labels, third-party testing releases). Every vendor is scored on the same criteria — no pay-to-play. See our editorial-independence disclosure for the full policy, including brands with an editorial relationship to this site.
