Turkey tail (Trametes versicolor, Coriolus versicolor) has one of the more robust research portfolios in the medicinal mushroom space, driven by two isolated polysaccharopeptide fractions — PSK (Krestin) and PSP — that have been approved and widely used as adjuvant cancer therapy in Japan since the 1980s. PSK is the second-most-widely used oncology adjuvant in Japan for gastric, colorectal, and lung cancer supportive care, with meta-analyses showing modest survival benefit when added to chemotherapy. This is the strongest published cancer-adjuvant evidence for any medicinal mushroom fraction. The oral consumer tincture does not deliver isolated PSK/PSP at Japanese-clinical doses, but a fruit-body triple-extract does capture the beta-glucan and polysaccharopeptide fractions that underlie the pharmacology. Turkey tail is also one of the safer mushrooms — no meaningful drug interactions, minimal contraindications, well tolerated in long-term use.
