Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) is a widely consumed culinary mushroom with a modest but real supplement research portfolio. Its signature bioactive is lentinan, a beta-1,3-glucan with beta-1,6 branches, which has been used as an injectable adjuvant in Japanese oncology (gastric cancer supportive care) — the oral tincture form does not replicate injectable lentinan pharmacokinetics, but oral beta-glucans still engage gut-associated lymphoid tissue and produce measurable immune signaling. Shiitake also contains ergothioneine (a mitochondrial antioxidant that mammalian cells actively transport and retain), and eritadenine, a compound with modest lipid-lowering effects in animal studies. General-population supplementation evidence is thin — most human research is either injectable lentinan (not applicable to tinctures) or dietary-level shiitake consumption (whole mushrooms are cheaper and deliver more mass).
