Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a wild-harvested (traditionally) or cultivated sclerotial mass that grows primarily on birch trees in cold northern climates. It contains a distinctive suite of triterpenoids (inotodiol, betulinic acid derivatives, ergosterol peroxide), a very high ORAC-measured antioxidant load driven by melanin and polyphenolic compounds, and beta-glucans. In vitro and animal studies show notable antioxidant, immune-modulating, and some cancer-cell-cytotoxic activity; human trial evidence is much thinner — small trials in psoriasis (topical) and inflammatory bowel disease, no large placebo-controlled outcome trials in healthy adults. Two real caveats: chaga is very high in oxalates (contains ~14mg oxalate per gram of dried chaga in some analyses) which has been implicated in at least one case report of chaga-induced oxalate nephropathy in a chronic user with pre-existing kidney disease; and chaga's blood-thinning effect (via ergosterol peroxide and other constituents) means users on warfarin or antiplatelet drugs should avoid it. Mycoterra's fruit-body triple extraction is the appropriate methodology. Standard tier with a modest safety flag reflected in the safety dimension score.
The Vyvata score's Evidence dimension measures the quality of published RCT support for a product's active ingredients at the label dose. Our source hierarchy: double-blind RCTs in MEDLINE-indexed journals > single-blind RCTs > open-label trials > observational studies > mechanism papers > N=1 case studies (anecdotes). Predatory journals and manufacturer-authored studies without independent replication are weighted down.
Product-specific evidence citations for this item are embedded in the analysis text on the "Analysis" tab. For the full framework and evidence hierarchy, see the methodology page.

The Vyvata score measures product integrity against a published rubric, not customer sentiment. Vyvata does not aggregate, republish, or license third-party reviews — the links below open search pages on their respective platforms.
Every VSF-related metafield surfaced verbatim. Nothing hidden. If you spot data that looks wrong, let us know.
Every score is set from the published rubric, audit-logged, and rescored whenever new evidence emerges (published trials, updated labels, third-party testing releases). Every vendor is scored on the same criteria — no pay-to-play. See our editorial-independence disclosure for the full policy, including brands with an editorial relationship to this site.
