Salivary nitric-oxide test strips (Approved Medical / Approved Medical Solutions and comparable branded strips like Berkeley Life and Neogenis / HumanN) measure salivary nitrite as a proxy for whole-body nitric oxide status. The analytical-validity concern is meaningful: salivary nitrite reflects the enterosalivary nitrate cycle — dietary nitrate (leafy greens, beets) is reduced to nitrite by oral commensal bacteria on the tongue — and is only a partial and heavily-diet-timing-dependent proxy for actual physiological nitric-oxide bioavailability and endothelial function. Peer-reviewed comparisons of salivary strip results against plasma nitrate/nitrite and against flow-mediated dilation (the gold standard for endothelial-NO function) show modest correlation at best, with meaningful noise from recent meal, oral hygiene, antibacterial mouthwash use (which suppresses the oral bacteria that make the reduction happen), and hydration. Practically: a low strip reading might reflect low dietary nitrate intake, recent chlorhexidine mouthwash, or high oral acidity — not necessarily impaired systemic NO physiology. Clinical utility for a consumer testing NO status is limited: the actionable intervention (eat more leafy greens or beets) is a general dietary recommendation that doesn't require a strip result. Rejected on analytical-validity and clinical-utility grounds — the strip measures something real but it's a poor proxy for the underlying question, and the resulting action is diet advice a user could act on without the strip. Would move to Standard 58+ with published third-party validation against plasma nitrate/nitrite and clear disclosure of the confounders.
The Vyvata score's Evidence dimension measures the quality of published RCT support for a product's active ingredients at the label dose. Our source hierarchy: double-blind RCTs in MEDLINE-indexed journals > single-blind RCTs > open-label trials > observational studies > mechanism papers > N=1 case studies (anecdotes). Predatory journals and manufacturer-authored studies without independent replication are weighted down.
Product-specific evidence citations for this item are embedded in the analysis text on the "Analysis" tab. For the full framework and evidence hierarchy, see the methodology page.

The Vyvata score measures product integrity against a published rubric, not customer sentiment. Vyvata does not aggregate, republish, or license third-party reviews — the links below open search pages on their respective platforms.
Every VSF-related metafield surfaced verbatim. Nothing hidden. If you spot data that looks wrong, let us know.
Every score is set from the published rubric, audit-logged, and rescored whenever new evidence emerges (published trials, updated labels, third-party testing releases). Every vendor is scored on the same criteria — no pay-to-play. See our editorial-independence disclosure for the full policy, including brands with an editorial relationship to this site.
