Annona species (custard apple, soursop/graviola, cherimoya, sweetsop) contain a class of alkaloids called acetogenins, of which the most studied is annonacin. Annonacin is a complex I mitochondrial inhibitor at nanomolar concentrations and has been implicated as a probable cause of atypical parkinsonism in Guadeloupe, where soursop consumption is culturally high (Caparros-Lefebvre & Elbaz 1999 Lancet; Champy et al. 2005 Mov Disord; Lannuzel et al. 2008). The population-level association is strong: Guadeloupean atypical parkinsonism prevalence is 5-10x the expected rate, and the epidemiological signal maps to annonacin exposure. EFSA and the French ANSES have issued advisory statements against habitual consumption of concentrated Annona products. This SKU is a tincture (60ml drops) of 'Annona aceratum' — a concentrated extract that maximizes acetogenin content relative to the whole fruit. Autofailed under safety_concern: repeated oral exposure to concentrated Annona is a documented risk factor for atypical parkinsonism. Rejected at 28.
