Amazon Elements is Amazon's private-label supplement line, which uses a transparency program (an "Item Element" code links each unit to a specific manufacturing facility and lot with published ingredient sourcing information) that is genuinely better than most mass-market brands on the manufacturing-provenance dimension. Biotin (vitamin B7) at 5000mcg is a common OTC dose. The evidence issue is what biotin actually does at this dose. Biotin is genuinely essential — it functions as a coenzyme for carboxylase enzymes involved in fatty acid and amino acid metabolism, and true biotin deficiency causes hair loss, skin rash, and neurological symptoms. However, true biotin deficiency is rare in Americans (the microbiome produces meaningful biotin, and dietary intake is adequate for most people). Supplementation at 5000mcg (over 16000% of the RDA of 30mcg) has weak evidence for hair, skin, and nail improvement in non-deficient adults — the only well-controlled trial showing benefit was in patients with confirmed uncombable hair syndrome. A serious safety flag: high-dose biotin (>1000mcg/day) interferes with many immunoassay-based lab tests including troponin (heart attack detection), TSH, and hormone panels — the FDA issued a safety communication about biotin interference in 2017, and dangerous misdiagnoses have been reported. Standard tier reflecting a legitimate manufacturing-transparent B-vitamin, tempered by weak general-population efficacy evidence for cosmetic claims and real lab-test-interference safety concerns.
The Vyvata score's Evidence dimension measures the quality of published RCT support for a product's active ingredients at the label dose. Our source hierarchy: double-blind RCTs in MEDLINE-indexed journals > single-blind RCTs > open-label trials > observational studies > mechanism papers > N=1 case studies (anecdotes). Predatory journals and manufacturer-authored studies without independent replication are weighted down.
Product-specific evidence citations for this item are embedded in the analysis text on the "Analysis" tab. For the full framework and evidence hierarchy, see the methodology page.

The Vyvata score measures product integrity against a published rubric, not customer sentiment. Vyvata does not aggregate, republish, or license third-party reviews — the links below open search pages on their respective platforms.
Every VSF-related metafield surfaced verbatim. Nothing hidden. If you spot data that looks wrong, let us know.
Every score is set from the published rubric, audit-logged, and rescored whenever new evidence emerges (published trials, updated labels, third-party testing releases). Every vendor is scored on the same criteria — no pay-to-play. See our editorial-independence disclosure for the full policy, including brands with an editorial relationship to this site.
