Why this scored 47/100

Alfa Vitamins is a Miami-based mass-market Hispanic-market-oriented vitamin brand. This product is 1000mg of flax oil in a softgel, marketed as "Omega 3-6-9." The misleading_naming issue is significant: flax oil contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, a plant omega-3), linoleic acid (omega-6, abundant throughout the standard American diet), and modest oleic acid (omega-9, which is not an essential fatty acid). Buyers reading "Omega 3-6-9" from marketing that they associate with fish oil are being invited to substitute a plant ALA source for marine EPA/DHA — and the substitution does not work pharmacologically. ALA is converted to EPA and DHA at very low efficiency in humans (approximately 5% of ALA converts to EPA, less than 0.5% to DHA in typical adults; the rate is even lower in men). The EPA/DHA pharmacology that produces the cardiovascular and neurological benefits of fish oil is not meaningfully replicated by ALA supplementation. Additionally, most Americans already consume excess omega-6 from seed oils in the standard diet; adding more omega-6 via flax oil supplementation moves the omega-6:omega-3 ratio in the wrong direction. The omega-9 marketing addition is essentially cosmetic (oleic acid is not essential, is abundant in olive oil and most cooking fats, and is not something anyone needs to supplement). Rejected: this product's naming invites confusion with fish oil while delivering a fundamentally different fatty acid profile.

Evidence & sources

The Vyvata score's Evidence dimension measures the quality of published RCT support for a product's active ingredients at the label dose. Our source hierarchy: double-blind RCTs in MEDLINE-indexed journals > single-blind RCTs > open-label trials > observational studies > mechanism papers > N=1 case studies (anecdotes). Predatory journals and manufacturer-authored studies without independent replication are weighted down.

Product-specific evidence citations for this item are embedded in the analysis text on the "Analysis" tab. For the full framework and evidence hierarchy, see the methodology page.

How to read the Evidence dimension

  • 80–100: Multiple double-blind RCTs in indexed journals directly testing this product OR the exact ingredients at the exact dose.
  • 60–79: Single double-blind RCT + supporting ingredient literature at the studied dose.
  • 40–59: Open-label trials + ingredient literature; no product-specific double-blind evidence.
  • 20–39: Ingredient literature only; no product-specific trials or trials in predatory venues.
  • 0–19: No credible evidence base or unverifiable claims.
