NusaPure Cascara Sagrada 10:1 Extract at 900 mg per capsule (implying 9 g raw bark equivalent) is a stimulant laxative containing hydroxyanthracene glycosides (cascarosides A-D) that hydrolyze in the colon to release anthrones stimulating intestinal motility. FDA regulatory history: in 2002 the FDA declared cascara sagrada (along with aloe latex) NOT generally recognized as safe and effective for OTC laxative use because the manufacturers failed to provide safety and effectiveness data required for continued OTC monograph status (21 CFR Part 310, 67 Fed Reg 31125). The EMA and multiple European monographs restrict cascara to short-term use (<1-2 weeks) due to concerns about melanosis coli, electrolyte disturbances, dependence, and potential (though contested) genotoxicity of hydroxyanthracenes. In 2020-2021 the EU Commission Regulation 2021/468 prohibited hydroxyanthracene derivatives in food supplements. Rejected under safety_concern.
