This distinction is critical: apricot kernel-derived amygdalin/laetrile has been marketed as an alternative cancer treatment for decades despite FDA warnings and repeated case reports of cyanide poisoning from kernel or laetrile consumption (Bromley 2005 BMJ case report, Sauer 2015 case series, Konstantatos 2017). The FDA banned laetrile from interstate commerce as an unapproved cancer treatment.
