Why this scored 34/100

Dr. Tobias Colon 14 Day Cleanse is a colon-cleanse / detox positioning product built around stimulant laxatives — senna leaf (sennosides), cascara sagrada — combined with psyllium husk (a legitimate soluble fiber). The 'detox' and 'colon cleanse' positioning is an unverified medical claim: the colon does not require pharmaceutical or herbal cleansing in a person with normal bowel function, and there is no clinical evidence that supplement-based colon cleansing improves health outcomes in healthy adults. Additionally and more seriously, stimulant laxatives (senna, cascara sagrada) used for periods longer than a few days cause dependence — the bowel becomes reliant on stimulant input to trigger peristalsis, and stopping the product produces rebound constipation that reinforces continued use. Chronic stimulant-laxative use causes electrolyte disturbances (potassium loss, magnesium loss), can cause 'melanosis coli' (harmless but visible colon lining discoloration), and in prolonged use has been associated with impaired bowel function. Cascara sagrada was reclassified by FDA in 2002 as not generally recognized as safe and effective for OTC laxative use due to insufficient safety data at long-term use, though it remained available as a supplement under DSHEA. 14 days of stimulant-laxative daily use is not medically appropriate for a general-population 'cleanse' — it is longer than the medical maximum for OTC senna use. Autofailed under unverified_medical_claim (the 'detox' and 'cleanse' positioning) with additional serious safety concern around stimulant-laxative dependency and electrolyte risk.

Evidence & sources

The Vyvata score's Evidence dimension measures the quality of published RCT support for a product's active ingredients at the label dose. Our source hierarchy: double-blind RCTs in MEDLINE-indexed journals > single-blind RCTs > open-label trials > observational studies > mechanism papers > N=1 case studies (anecdotes). Predatory journals and manufacturer-authored studies without independent replication are weighted down.

Product-specific evidence citations for this item are embedded in the analysis text on the "Analysis" tab. For the full framework and evidence hierarchy, see the methodology page.

How to read the Evidence dimension

  • 80–100: Multiple double-blind RCTs in indexed journals directly testing this product OR the exact ingredients at the exact dose.
  • 60–79: Single double-blind RCT + supporting ingredient literature at the studied dose.
  • 40–59: Open-label trials + ingredient literature; no product-specific double-blind evidence.
  • 20–39: Ingredient literature only; no product-specific trials or trials in predatory venues.
  • 0–19: No credible evidence base or unverifiable claims.
