Why this scored 52/100

Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) is a real cognitive/energy supplement with moderate evidence for age-related cognitive decline and depression in older adults (Malaguarnera 2007, Am J Clin Nutr; Wang 2014 meta-analysis for depression). It also has modest evidence for peripheral neuropathy (particularly diabetic and chemotherapy-induced). Effective trial doses: 1500-3000mg/day, typically split into 500-1000mg 2-3x/day. Gummy format is a problematic delivery vehicle for ALCAR: (a) each gummy typically holds 100-300mg of active — reaching 1.5-3g/day requires 5-30 gummies; (b) gummies contain 2-4g sugar per piece — 30 gummies is 60-120g of added sugar, comparable to soda; (c) heat-processing gummy manufacture can degrade heat-sensitive amino acid conjugates like ALCAR. 'Biyode' is a generic Chinese OEM brand. Standard 52/100: real ingredient with real evidence, held down by gummy-format subtherapeutic dosing and sugar load, and no per-gummy mg disclosure.

Evidence & sources

The Vyvata score's Evidence dimension measures the quality of published RCT support for a product's active ingredients at the label dose. Our source hierarchy: double-blind RCTs in MEDLINE-indexed journals > single-blind RCTs > open-label trials > observational studies > mechanism papers > N=1 case studies (anecdotes). Predatory journals and manufacturer-authored studies without independent replication are weighted down.

Product-specific evidence citations for this item are embedded in the analysis text on the "Analysis" tab. For the full framework and evidence hierarchy, see the methodology page.

How to read the Evidence dimension

  • 80–100: Multiple double-blind RCTs in indexed journals directly testing this product OR the exact ingredients at the exact dose.
  • 60–79: Single double-blind RCT + supporting ingredient literature at the studied dose.
  • 40–59: Open-label trials + ingredient literature; no product-specific double-blind evidence.
  • 20–39: Ingredient literature only; no product-specific trials or trials in predatory venues.
  • 0–19: No credible evidence base or unverifiable claims.
