Ingredient face-off
Best Magnesium Supplements Compared: Glycinate vs Citrate vs Threonate vs Malate
Magnesium is the highest-search-volume mineral supplement — and the category with the widest quality spread. Form determines everything: glycinate is best for sleep and anxiety, citrate for constipation and migraine, L-threonate for cognition, malate for daytime energy, and oxide is a cheap laxative most brands pad their labels with. This head-to-head ranks the top-scoring magnesium products in the Vyvata catalog on Evidence, Formulation (elemental magnesium content + bioavailability), Manufacturing (third-party testing), Safety, Transparency, and Sustainability — the same 6-dimension rubric applied to every product. Which magnesium form should you take?
The decision tree isn't 'which brand'. It's 'which form' — because the counter-ion (glycine, citrate, threonate, etc.) changes bioavailability, side-effect profile, and target tissue. Then, within your chosen form, pick the highest-scoring product.
| Goal | Best form | Why | Elemental target |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleep · anxiety · general repletion | Glycinate (bisglycinate) | Best-tolerated, ~14% elemental, calms rather than laxates, plenty of RCT support | 200-400 mg/day |
| Constipation · migraine prevention | Citrate | ~16% elemental, ~25-30% absorption, mildly osmotic (that's the point for constipation); AAN Level B for migraine prophylaxis | 200-400 mg/day |
| Cognition · memory support | L-threonate (Magtein) | Only form shown to raise brain magnesium levels (Slutsky 2010; Liu 2016). Low systemic dose — layer with a cheaper form for repletion | ~144 mg elemental (2g Magtein) |
| Daytime energy · muscle recovery | Malate | Slightly stimulating rather than calming. Some fibromyalgia trial support (Abraham 1995) | 200-400 mg/day, morning |
| Cardiovascular · palpitations | Taurate | Taurine cardiovascular synergy; less direct RCT data than glycinate/citrate | 200-400 mg/day |
| Bowel prep only | Oxide | ~4% absorption. It's the active ingredient in Milk of Magnesia. Cheap laxative, not a repletion tool. | Occasional only |
Watch out for the oxide-padding trick. Cheap blends list "Magnesium Complex" with glycinate + citrate + oxide on the front label, then use mostly oxide by weight (because it's dirt cheap) to inflate the total elemental number. A label that reads '400 mg elemental magnesium' from a 60%-oxide blend actually delivers ~150 mg systemically. Full breakdown of the trick and every form's bioavailability data in our Beyond Glycinate deep-dive.

#1 Thorne Magnesium Bisglycinate85/100 · Elite
[Rescored via evidence crawl] Previous score 81 → new 85. Evidence found: Schuette SA, Lashner BA, Janghorbani M. Bioavailability of magnesium diglycinate vs magnesium oxide in patients with ileal resection. JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr. 1994;18(5):430-435. | Boyle NB et al. The Effects of Magnesium Supplementation on Subjective Anxiety and Stress-A Systematic Review. Nutrients. 2017;9(5):429. | Albion Minerals TRAACS bisglycinate chelate technology: patented mineral-amino acid chelate for enhanced absorption.. Rationale: Thorne uses Albion (Balchem) TRAACS magnesium bisglycinate — the reference chelate technology with demonstrated superior absorption vs oxide (Schuette 1994) and lower GI side effects. Practitioner-grade brand + patented delivery + established anxiety/sleep evidence class justifies Elite.

#5 Doctor's Best High Absorption Magnesium78/100 · Verified
[Rescored via evidence crawl] Previous score 72 → new 78. Evidence found: Schuette SA et al. Bioavailability of magnesium diglycinate vs magnesium oxide. JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr. 1994;18(5):430-435. | Doctor's Best High Absorption Magnesium: Albion (TRAACS) magnesium bisglycinate/lysinate chelate.. Rationale: Doctor's Best High Absorption Magnesium uses Albion TRAACS chelate (bisglycinate/lysinate blend) — the same premium chelate technology as Thorne and Pure Encaps. Third-party tested. Uplift to 78; below Elite because Doctor's Best label transparency and testing publication is less prominent than practitioner-grade competitors.
#6 Magnesium Glycinate 90 Caps Magnesium Bisglycinate/ Life Extension78/100 · Verified
Life Extension is a well-established supplement brand known for citing primary research directly in its product literature (as this listing does with numbered references) and for maintaining in-house testing infrastructure. Magnesium glycinate has strong evidence for bioavailability and gastrointestinal tolerance compared to other magnesium forms, supporting the bone, muscle, nerve, and cardiovascular claims made here. The combination of a well-documented, single-ingredient formulation and a reputable, research-citing brand earns this product Vyvata Verified status.

#7 Albion Magnesium & Calcium with Vitamins D3 & K276/100 · Verified
This is the cleanly-formulated bone-support stack: Albion chelated magnesium and calcium bisglycinates paired with D3 (calcium absorption) and K2 (arterial calcium routing — Bolland 2015 cardiovascular concern mitigation). K2 addresses the isolated-calcium cardiovascular risk. Named-source TRAACS chelates plus co-factors give solid Verified. Would move to Elite with disclosed K2-MK7 form/dose and third-party verification per SKU.

#8 Mellö Magnesium - 10 Travel Sticks74/100 · Verified
Three bioavailable magnesium forms (glycinate, lactate-gluconate, Aquamin) with GABA and L-theanine, ~325 mg elemental Mg per serving. Magnesium glycinate has RCT support for sleep quality (Abbasi 2012), L-theanine 200 mg supports subjective calm (Kim 2019). Foria is an established brand with third-party COAs. Deducted for GABA's questionable oral CNS absorption and mid-tier stress evidence.
#9 Mellö Magnesium Pouch74/100 · Verified
Same Mellö formula in bulk pouch: three magnesium forms + GABA + L-theanine. Mg glycinate for sleep (Abbasi 2012) and L-theanine for calm (Kim 2019) are well-supported at label doses. Foria posts third-party COAs; sustainability trimmed slightly for single-material sachets in the travel-stick line.
#10 Solgar Calcium Magnesium with Vitamin D3 150 Tablets74/100 · Verified
[Rescored via evidence crawl] Previous score 66 → new 74. Evidence found: Tang BM, et al. Use of calcium or calcium in combination with vitamin D supplementation to prevent fractures and bone loss. Lancet. 2007;370(9588):657-66. | Bischoff-Ferrari HA, et al. Pooled analysis of vitamin D dose requirements for fracture prevention. N Engl J Med. 2012;367(1):40-9.. Rationale: Calcium + magnesium + D3 is the evidence-backed bone-support triad. TIER-B evidence for reducing fractures in older adults (Tang 2007, Bischoff-Ferrari 2012). +8 uplift because this SKU adds the D3 that the Cal-Mag-Boron SKU omitted - making it a more complete standalone bone formula.

How the scoring works
Every product is scored on six dimensions — evidence (RCT quality supporting the active ingredients at the label dose), formulation (dose adequacy, bioavailability form, redundancy), manufacturing (third-party testing, GMP, facility audits), safety (adverse-event profile, interactions, dose ceiling), transparency (dose disclosure vs proprietary blends, honest marketing), and sustainability (sourcing, packaging, corporate practice). Tier thresholds: Elite 85+, Verified 70–84, Standard 50–69, Rejected 0–49. Rejected products stay listed with reasons. Full rubric →
