Best Fish Oil & Omega-3 Supplements Compared: EPA/DHA Ratios, Triglyceride Form, Purity
Omega-3 fish oil is one of the best-evidenced supplements — cardiovascular endpoints (REDUCE-IT, VITAL trials), triglyceride reduction, cognitive support, and mood modulation all have real RCT literature. But the market has a massive quality spread: rancidity is common (fish oil oxidizes fast), heavy-metal contamination is real, and molecular form (triglyceride vs ethyl ester) affects both absorption and stability. This ranks the top-scoring omega-3 products in the Vyvata catalog — with Nordic Naturals' Ultimate Omega line hitting 87/100 Elite, the highest supplement score in our catalog. Read the rubric →

Which omega-3 for your goal?
The active fats are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Different use cases need different EPA:DHA ratios, different forms, and different total doses:
| Your goal | Target ratio | EPA+DHA total | Best evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cardiovascular / triglyceride reduction | Higher EPA (2:1 or greater EPA:DHA) | 2-4 g/day | REDUCE-IT (Bhatt 2019) at 4g/day EPA; ~25% reduction in major CV events |
| Depression / mood support | Higher EPA (2:1+) | 1-2 g/day (EPA-heavy) | Sublette 2011 meta-analysis; EPA-dominant formulations outperform DHA-dominant for depression endpoints |
| Cognitive / brain health | Higher DHA (1:2 or greater DHA:EPA) | 1-2 g/day | DHA is the primary omega-3 in brain phospholipids; needed for cognitive support |
| Pregnancy / postnatal | Higher DHA | 200-300 mg DHA/day minimum | DHA critical for fetal brain development; ACOG recommendation |
| Joint / inflammation | Balanced (1:1) | 1-2 g/day | Both EPA and DHA are anti-inflammatory via different pathways |
| General health | Balanced | 500-1000 mg/day EPA+DHA | Minimum for baseline cardiovascular signal |
Two label traps to check on any fish oil: (1) EPA+DHA is what matters, not "1000 mg fish oil" (which is total oil weight — actual EPA+DHA may be only 300-400 mg per that gram). (2) Triglyceride form (natural) is better than ethyl ester form — triglyceride form has higher bioavailability (Dyerberg 2010) and better oxidation stability. Cheap fish oil is usually ethyl ester; premium brands like Nordic Naturals use re-esterified triglyceride form.
Third-party purity testing (heavy metals, PCBs, oxidation as measured by TOTOX value below 26) matters more for fish oil than almost any other supplement. Nordic Naturals, Carlson Labs, and Sports Research all publish third-party purity data.

Per-product deep dive
#1 Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega 2X – High-Potency Fish Oil | 2150 mg EPA & DHA | Lemon Flavor, 120 Softgels87/100 · Elite
2150mg EPA+DHA in triglyceride form (superior absorption vs. ethyl ester per Dyerberg 2010). Nordic Naturals is IFOS/Friend of the Sea certified with published COAs. REDUCE-IT trial (Bhatt 2019) validates high-dose omega-3 CV benefit. Sold by 3rd-party reseller Lululiner but product identity is Nordic Naturals — anchor Elite.
#2 Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega86/100 · Elite
1280 mg total omega-3 (650 EPA / 450 DHA) per serving in triglyceride form — matches the anchor for this rubric. RCT-effective for cardiovascular endpoints and triglyceride lowering (Skulas-Ray et al. AHA 2019). Batch-specific COAs published, Friends of the Sea, IFOS 5-star typical. Elite for the combination of TG form, dose, and third-party transparency.
#3 Life Extension Super Omega-3 EPA/DHA82/100 · Elite
[Rescored via evidence crawl] Previous score 76 → new 82. Evidence found: IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards) 5-star certified for purity, potency, and freshness on Life Extension Super Omega-3 lots. | Mozaffarian D, Wu JH. Omega-3 fatty acids and cardiovascular disease: effects on risk factors, molecular pathways, and clinical events. J Am Coll Cardiol. 2011;58(20):2047-2067. | Bhatt DL et al. REDUCE-IT trial: EPA and cardiovascular events. N Engl J Med. 2019;380:11-22 (icosapent ethyl class evidence).. Rationale: Life Extension Super Omega-3 delivers 700 mg EPA + 500 mg DHA per 2-softgel serving with olive polyphenols and sesame lignans for oxidative stability. IFOS 5-star certification is the gold standard for fish oil third-party verification. Elite tier justified by combined purity certification, therapeutic-dose delivery, and antioxidant matrix.
#4 Sports Research Triple Strength Omega-382/100 · Verified
1250 mg fish oil delivering 690 mg EPA and 260 mg DHA in triglyceride form. Omega-3 has a massive RCT base for cardiovascular endpoints (REDUCE-IT 2019 for icosapent, Mozaffarian 2011 meta) and this dose is within the guideline-effective range. Triglyceride form is superior to ethyl ester for absorption (Dyerberg 2010). IFOS 5-star certification is a strong third-party purity signal. High Verified — one of the best OTC omega-3s on the market.
#5 Designs for Health OmegAvail Ultra80/100 · Verified
[Rescored via evidence crawl] Previous score 75 → new 80. Evidence found: Designs for Health OmegAvail Ultra: high-EPA/DHA fish oil in triglyceride form with lipase blend (TG form). | Dyerberg J et al. Bioavailability of marine n-3 fatty acid formulations. Prostaglandins Leukot Essent Fatty Acids. 2010;83(3):137-141 (TG vs EE form comparison).. Rationale: OmegAvail Ultra uses triglyceride-form (TG) fish oil, which has 27-70% better absorption than ethyl-ester form (Dyerberg 2010). Added lipase enzyme complex further supports absorption in low-fat meals. Practitioner-grade brand + TG form + delivery enhancement warrants uplift to 80.
#6 Nordic Naturals Omega-379/100 · Verified
690 mg omega-3 per serving in true triglyceride form (Neubronner et al. 2011 showed TG form ~24% better absorbed than ethyl ester). Non-GMO Project verified, third-party tested, batch COAs published on request. Nordic Naturals is Friends of the Sea certified. Slightly under the flagship Ultimate Omega dose which keeps it at the top of Verified rather than Elite.
#7 NOW Foods Ultra Omega-378/100 · Verified
[Rescored via evidence crawl] Previous score 73 → new 78. Evidence found: NOW Foods Ultra Omega-3: molecularly distilled fish oil, GOED/IFOS-verified purity, 500 mg EPA + 250 mg DHA per softgel. | Mozaffarian D, Wu JH. Omega-3 fatty acids and cardiovascular disease. J Am Coll Cardiol. 2011;58(20):2047-2067.. Rationale: NOW Ultra Omega-3 delivers 750 mg EPA+DHA per softgel in molecularly distilled form. NOW's third-party testing program includes ConsumerLab and IFOS spot-checks. Uplift to 78; below Elite because certification isn't as consistently prominent as Life Extension Super Omega-3 IFOS 5-star.
#8 Ocean Blue Professional 2100 Omega-3 Minis – 2100mg Fish Oil, Orange Flavor74/100 · Verified
Ocean Blue Professional 2100 is a high-concentrate fish oil delivering roughly 2100 mg total omega-3s per serving with a favorable EPA:DHA ratio in small softgel format — a genuine therapeutic-dose omega-3, unlike typical drugstore 1000 mg fish oil that yields only ~300 mg EPA+DHA. Evidence for high-dose EPA/DHA on triglycerides and cardiovascular risk is strong (Bhatt 2019 REDUCE-IT trial for icosapent ethyl at 4 g/day; Skulas-Ray 2019 AHA advisory). Ocean Blue publishes IFOS third-party purity/oxidation testing on their professional line, which is a real quality signal. Below Elite because the label uses a triglyceride-form fish oil rather than the more bioavailable re-esterified TG or phospholipid form, and per-lot COAs aren't always posted publicly. Would move to Elite with IFOS 5-star ratings consistently posted plus published oxidation (TOTOX) values per lot.

#9 Total Omega-3 Fish Oil 2200mg - Made from Antarctic Krill w/Astaxanthin, Wild Sockeye Salmon & Alaska Pollock - 960mg of EPA & DHA - 120 Softgels72/100 · Verified
Sports Research reformulation — 2,200 mg omega-3 total with 960 mg EPA/DHA plus krill phospholipids and astaxanthin. Wax-ester + phospholipid delivery has better absorption vs. ethyl esters (Schuchardt 2011). Third-party tested, IFOS-style purity claims, non-GMO verified. Verified.
#10 Plant Based Omega-3 - Featuring life's OMEGA70/100 · Verified
life's OMEGA is DSM's branded algal EPA+DHA — the leading vegan/vegetarian omega-3 source with real EPA (not just DHA) content unusual for algal sources. Bioequivalence to fish oil demonstrated (Lane 2014; Arterburn 2008). Sustainability advantage vs marine sources. Sits at low-Verified. Would move up with per-cap EPA+DHA disclosure explicit on-cap.

How the scoring works
Every product is scored on six dimensions — evidence (RCT quality supporting the active ingredients at the label dose), formulation (dose adequacy, bioavailability form, redundancy), manufacturing (third-party testing, GMP, facility audits), safety (adverse-event profile, interactions, dose ceiling), transparency (dose disclosure vs proprietary blends, honest marketing), and sustainability (sourcing, packaging, corporate practice). Tier thresholds: Elite 85+, Verified 70–84, Standard 50–69, Rejected 0–49. Rejected products stay listed with reasons. Full rubric →
