Oura vs Whoop vs Apple Watch: Which Wearable for Sleep, Training, or Cardiac Health

An honest comparison of the three most-recommended wearables — plus the in-catalog alternatives (Withings ScanWatch 2, Fitbit Sense) we would actually reach for if cardiac clearance mattered.

Three wearables come up in almost every conversation about health tracking: Oura Ring, Whoop 4.0, and Apple Watch. They are marketed at different audiences, priced on completely different models, and validated to very different standards. If you are trying to pick one, the honest answer is that they are not really competing for the same job.

This piece is a straight comparison of what each device is actually good at, where it is oversold, and — because we should be transparent — what we recommend from our own catalog when the goal is cardiac screening or clinical-grade sleep tracking. Oura, Whoop, and Apple Watch are not currently in our Verified catalog; the in-catalog alternative for the cardiac and sleep use cases is the Withings ScanWatch 2, and we will get to that.

The three devices at a glance

Before comparing use cases, it is worth being clear about what these devices are and how you actually pay for them.

Oura Ring (Gen 3 and Gen 4)

A titanium finger ring with photoplethysmography (PPG) heart-rate and SpO2 sensors, a temperature sensor, and a 3-axis accelerometer. Battery lasts four to seven days. The ring costs roughly $299 to $499 depending on finish, and Oura moved to a subscription model in 2021 — currently around $5.99 per month after a six-month included trial. Without the subscription you get very limited data. Oura publishes peer-reviewed validation on sleep staging (SLEEP 2017, JMIR 2021) and has done more third-party accuracy work than most competitors in the ring form factor.

Whoop 4.0

A screenless fabric wrist band with PPG heart-rate, skin temperature, and SpO2 sensors. Whoop is exclusively subscription — you do not buy the hardware separately in any meaningful sense. The membership is currently around $30 per month on a monthly plan or ~$239 annually, and the strap is included. Whoop's positioning is athletic training: strain and recovery scores are the marquee metrics. Whoop publishes some validation work, though less peer-reviewed material than Oura.

Apple Watch (Series 9 and Ultra 2)

A general-purpose smartwatch that also does health tracking. Costs $399 to $799 depending on model. No mandatory subscription; some features live behind Fitness+ ($9.99/mo) but health tracking is native. Apple Watch has multiple FDA 510(k) clearances — the single-lead ECG app is cleared for atrial fibrillation detection, and irregular rhythm notifications are also cleared. Sleep tracking was added later and is not the strong suit of the platform, though it has improved through watchOS updates.

Which one for sleep tracking

If sleep is the primary reason you are buying a wearable, the honest ranking looks like this.

Oura wins on sleep-stage validation. The finger form factor gives cleaner PPG signal than the wrist for most people — the finger arteries are smaller and closer to the surface, and there is less muscle movement to filter out. Oura's published Cohen's kappa values against polysomnography for sleep staging land in the 0.5 to 0.7 range depending on the study and stage, which is the top of what consumer wearables achieve. The 2021 JMIR validation paper is a reasonable one to look up if you want to see the underlying numbers.

Whoop is decent at sleep but built for training. The wrist strap gets solid HRV data during sleep because you are still, but the sleep-stage classification is less rigorously published than Oura's. Whoop's sleep score weighs heavily toward recovery for the next day's training, which is fine if that is your use case and a bit off-target if you just want to know how you slept.

Apple Watch is the weakest of the three for sleep. The battery does not last a full day plus a full night unless you charge it during a specific window, which means many owners never wear it to bed. When they do, the sleep-stage algorithm is functional but not competitive with Oura on published validation. Apple's own sleep features focus on Sleep Schedule and Wind Down rather than detailed nightly analysis.

Which one for training

Whoop was built for this. Its whole business model — screenless strap, no fitness features, just a strain and recovery number every morning — is oriented around the training athlete. The membership includes coach-style narrative feedback and cycle tracking, and the strap gets accurate wrist HRV during sleep because it fits close and stays put during exercise.

If you are a serious endurance or strength athlete who wants to know, every morning, whether your body is ready to load up or should back off, Whoop's product is designed around exactly that question. The catch is $360 per year in perpetuity, and if you stop paying, the device stops working. That is a real cost worth acknowledging.

Oura does recovery scoring too, and its Readiness score is reasonable, though the ring is less oriented to active training. Some people find the ring uncomfortable during heavy lifting or grip-heavy work.

Apple Watch tracks workouts, GPS, and heart-rate zones very well and integrates with basically every fitness app. If your training question is "did I do the workout," Apple wins. If it is "should I have done the workout," Whoop or Oura are more useful.

Which one for cardiac health

This is where the differences become concrete rather than philosophical.

Cardiac clearance is a regulatory question, not a marketing one. A device that says it "tracks heart health" and one that has an FDA 510(k) clearance for atrial fibrillation detection are legally different things. Only the second one has been reviewed by a regulator against pre-registered performance criteria.

Apple Watch has 510(k) clearance for its single-lead ECG app and for its irregular rhythm notifications. That is real, and the Apple Heart Study published in NEJM in 2019 established that the algorithm's positive predictive value in a screening population was around 0.84. That is not perfect — false positives happen — but it is a defensible cardiac screening tool.

Whoop has no FDA cardiac clearance. It tracks heart rate and HRV. It does not screen for atrial fibrillation.

Oura has no FDA cardiac clearance for arrhythmia detection either, though it does track heart rate and has research programs on afib detection through the ring.

In our own catalog, the two devices we point people toward for cardiac use are the Withings ScanWatch 2 and the Fitbit Sense line. Both have FDA 510(k) clearance for ECG-based AFib detection, both have published validation data, and neither requires a monthly subscription to unlock the health features.

The subscription question

Wearable subscriptions are a real cost that deserves plain talk. Over five years, the ownership numbers look like this:

  • Whoop: $30/mo x 60 months = $1,800. If you stop paying, the strap becomes inert.
  • Oura: Ring ($350 average) + $5.99/mo x 54 months (subscription starts after six-month trial) = ~$674. Without the subscription, the app becomes a shadow of itself but the basic score screen still works.
  • Apple Watch: $499 upfront (Series 9), no mandatory subscription. Total: $499.
  • Withings ScanWatch 2: Roughly $349 upfront, no mandatory subscription. Total: $349.
  • Fitbit Sense: Under $200 for the original, some features behind Fitbit Premium ($9.99/mo) but core health tracking is free.

None of this makes one product right and another wrong. It does mean the Whoop "membership" is $1,300 more than a comparable device over five years, and that fact deserves to be on the table.

Form factor trade-offs, honestly

Which body site the sensor is on matters more than most reviews acknowledge.

Finger (Oura). Best PPG signal quality of the three. Discreet. Uncomfortable during heavy grip work. Loose during weight loss and hot weather. Ring sizing is a real commitment — you cannot easily change hands or sizes.

Wrist (Whoop, Apple, ScanWatch, Fitbit). Familiar, easy to swap positions, but PPG accuracy suffers with wrist motion, tattoos, dark skin tones (documented issue with older PPG hardware), and loose fit. Whoop's strap mitigates this by fitting close. Apple's brightness cranks the LEDs to compensate.

Under-mattress (Withings Sleep Mat). Cleanest signal for sleep because ballistocardiography through the mattress is not affected by wrist movement. Only works when you are in your own bed. No daytime data.

The picks, in one paragraph each

If your top priority is sleep and you want the best consumer sleep science: Oura, honestly. It is not in our catalog and we cannot vouch for it through our rubric yet, but the published validation work is strong. The in-catalog answer, which we do vouch for at 86 Verified, is the Withings Sleep Tracking Mat.

If your top priority is training and you are an endurance or strength athlete willing to pay for it: Whoop. Also not in our catalog. The subscription cost is what it is. The in-catalog alternative for the training-tracking use case, at a lower total-cost-of-ownership, is the Garmin Vivoactive 5.

If your top priority is cardiac screening and general daily health: Withings ScanWatch 2 or Apple Watch, depending on whether you want a smartwatch OS. Both have FDA cardiac clearances. The ScanWatch has three times the battery life, a more sleep-friendly form factor, and no ecosystem lock-in. The Apple Watch has the wider app ecosystem.

If you already live in the Fitbit ecosystem: the Fitbit Sense or Sense 2 covers the cardiac, sleep, and stress bases well. Do not throw away years of Fitbit trend data to switch platforms.

The bottom line

The Oura vs Whoop vs Apple Watch question is really three separate questions — sleep, training, cardiac — pretending to be one. The honest answer for most first-time buyers is that the best wearable is the one that survives on your wrist or under your mattress for a year of nightly data, not the one with the shiniest single-night dashboard. Battery life, comfort, and subscription obligations decide that more than sensor specs do.

Oura, Whoop, and Apple Watch each have real strengths and none is a bad choice for the right use case. Just make sure the use case matches the tool — and if cardiac clearance or independently published k-coefficient sleep validation matter to you, the ScanWatch 2 and Withings Sleep Mat are what we would put on our own wrist and under our own mattress. One more note worth adding: whatever you choose, wear it every night for at least sixty days before you decide whether it works for you. The single-night dashboard is theater. The trend across two months is the reason to wear a sensor at all.
