Search Amazon for "ECG smartwatch" under $80. You will get roughly two thousand results. Scroll through the first hundred and you will notice something odd: the watches look identical. Same case, same dial layout, same three-button configuration, same three screenshots from the same photo studio. The brand names are different — F300, ET240, K18, D18, M10, T99 — but the watches are the same watches. This is not coincidence. It is the Shenzhen white-label supply chain doing exactly what it was designed to do.

This post walks through how one reference smartwatch design ends up on Amazon under a dozen different brand names, why the same hardware gets sold with wildly different medical claims depending on which listing you look at, and what the actual manufacturing chain looks like. The case study is the F300 — Vyvata's catalog carries an F300 listing that scored 20 and was Rejected on unverified_medical_claim. But the pattern generalizes.

The Shenzhen sourcing chain in five minutes

Consumer electronics manufacturing in Shenzhen operates on a tiered ecosystem. At the top are Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) — companies that design reference smartwatches from scratch, including case tooling, PCB layout, chipset selection, and firmware. These ODMs sell finished designs, typically at minimum order quantities of 500-5000 units, to a second tier of trading companies and Amazon-facing resellers. That second tier prints their logo on the case, uploads their name into the firmware, writes English marketing copy, and lists on Amazon and Alibaba.

The ODM makes money on volume. It doesn't care what brand name goes on the case. As long as the trading company hits minimum order quantities, the ODM will produce the same watch under fifty different brand names. In some cases the ODM ships identical watches with only the printed logo changing between orders.

The result: a single reference design from a mid-tier Shenzhen ODM can appear on Amazon under 15-40 different brand names within six months of the reference SKU releasing. Alibaba's B2B directory makes this trivially discoverable if you look. Search Alibaba for "F300 smartwatch" and you will see dozens of factory listings offering the same device at $18-$28 per unit, with the note "customize your logo, packaging, and marketing text."

The F300 case study

The F300 is a reference smartwatch design that has been in the Shenzhen ecosystem since roughly 2021. Hardware: an nRF52832 Bluetooth chipset, a 1.32-inch color TFT display, a heart rate optical sensor of unspecified provenance, a three-axis accelerometer, and a small lithium battery. Software: the Da Fit or FitCloudPro app, which is the same white-label smartphone application used by dozens of other white-label smartwatches. Retail price on Alibaba: $22 per unit at 100 pieces.

What the F300 actually does, with reasonable accuracy: count steps, estimate sleep duration, and detect gross activity type. What the F300 claims to do on most Amazon listings: ECG electrocardiogram monitoring, atrial fibrillation detection, non-invasive blood glucose measurement, blood pressure monitoring, blood oxygen saturation, and SOS fall detection.

None of those medical-adjacent claims have any regulatory backing. The nRF52832 is a general-purpose Bluetooth SoC with no FDA clearance for any medical function. The optical HR sensor has no clearance for AFib detection. There is no clinically validated non-invasive blood glucose consumer sensor in existence — every major medical device company has tried, and every one has failed to hit the accuracy threshold required for clearance. Non-invasive blood pressure via optical wrist sensor has similarly never been cleared.

The listings claim these functions anyway because the FDA does not proactively police every Amazon listing, and the marketplace is playing whack-a-mole. When a listing gets taken down, another one appears with a new brand name.

Twelve names, one watch

The pattern is unmistakable once you know what to look for. The tell is not the brand name. The tell is the app.

The Da Fit / FitCloudPro / Gloryfit tell

Legitimate consumer wearables ship with proprietary companion apps. Apple Watch pairs with the Apple Watch app. Garmin uses Garmin Connect. Fitbit uses Fitbit. Withings uses Health Mate. Each of those apps is a proprietary asset owned by the company that manufactures the watch.

White-label Shenzhen watches almost universally pair with one of about six generic companion apps: Da Fit, FitCloudPro, Gloryfit, H Band, KwFit, or VeryFitPro. These apps are white-label products themselves — sold to smartwatch ODMs for a few dollars per unit and configurable with the ODM's logo. If you download the companion app for a smartwatch and it is any of those, you are looking at a Shenzhen reference design regardless of what brand name is on the case.

The apps also share a specific characteristic that gives the game away: their permission requests are enormous. Da Fit typically requests access to your contacts, camera, precise location, and phone call logs. This is not because the watch needs those things. It is because the ODM app is a template with maximum permissions on by default, and no ODM has any incentive to lock it down.

Why the medical claims vary between listings

Here's the strange part. The same reference watch will be listed as an ECG-capable AFib detector on one Amazon page and as a fitness tracker with no medical claims on another. This is not a hardware difference. It is a marketing difference.

The Amazon-facing reseller who buys the watches from the Shenzhen ODM chooses which claims to make in their listing. Some resellers are more careful. Others go maximal. The reseller has no relationship to the hardware — they are printing a logo on a case and writing English copy. If they think "blood glucose monitor" will drive clicks, they add "blood glucose monitor" to the title. The watch does not measure blood glucose. The listing says it does. Some percentage of buyers will not check.

This is why Vyvata's scoring framework treats the listing as the source of truth. If a product page claims blood pressure monitoring without a listed FDA clearance number, it fails on unverified_medical_claim. It does not matter whether the underlying watch "could" measure something honestly. The claim is the product.

What actually works in the sub-$150 wearable category

Real wearables at reasonable prices exist. The distinction is that they publish their sensor specs, they have FDA clearance where it applies, and they use proprietary companion apps. In Vyvata's catalog, three brands consistently clear Verified:

  • Withings — the ScanWatch 2 (score 85) has an actual FDA 510(k) for AFib detection, and Withings publishes the validation studies.
  • Fitbit — the Fitbit Sense (score 80) has FDA-cleared ECG on the Sense line.
  • Garmin — the Vivoactive 5 (score 74) doesn't make medical claims — it publishes accurate GPS, HR, and training metrics.

The refurbished market for these brands is where the value lives if you're on a budget. A refurbished Fitbit Sense from a legitimate reseller is a better watch than an $80 F300 in every measurable way, and a fraction of the price of a new one.

The five-item checklist for any smartwatch listing

  1. Named manufacturer. Not just a brand name — a manufacturer with a real corporate identity, address, and support page. "F300 by V.I.P Digital Presence" is a reseller listing, not a manufacturer.
  2. Proprietary companion app. If the app is Da Fit, FitCloudPro, Gloryfit, or similar, the hardware is a Shenzhen reference design regardless of the price tag.
  3. FDA 510(k) number for any medical claim. ECG, AFib, blood pressure, and blood glucose are all regulated. No listed 510(k) means the claim is illegal.
  4. Published sensor accuracy. Legitimate brands publish HR accuracy against ECG in beats-per-minute error terms. White-label brands publish adjectives.
  5. Battery life claim consistency. Watches making 20+ day battery life claims with a color AMOLED display and always-on HR are almost always lying. Physics limits.

The bigger point

The Shenzhen ODM ecosystem produces some of the best consumer electronics in the world. It is not fundamentally corrupt. What is corrupt is the Amazon-facing reseller layer that takes commodity hardware and paints it with unverified medical claims to close a sale. The watch is not the problem. The claim on the listing is.

If you want an honest fitness tracker for $40, several exist — they just don't claim to measure your blood pressure. The moment a wrist-worn device at that price point advertises ECG, AFib detection, or non-invasive blood glucose, you are looking at a listing that was written to close a sale, not to describe a product. Skip it. The refurbished Garmin Vivosmart 5 at Verified tier is the honest version of the same price bracket.
