FAQ
- How do you score consumer wearables against clinical devices?
- The rubric measures product integrity — how well the device does what it claims. A smart ring claiming to measure HRV is judged against published agreement studies with polysomnography or Holter ECG. Devices that are honest about their accuracy limits and expose raw data score higher than those that make aggressive precision claims without publishing validation.
- Are any of these wearables FDA-cleared medical devices?
- A few (Apple Watch ECG feature, KardiaMobile, some CPAP devices, some CGM products) carry FDA clearance for specific indications. The vast majority of consumer wearables are wellness devices, not medical devices — the Manufacturing dimension notes clearance status when relevant. Never use a consumer wearable to diagnose or manage a medical condition without physician guidance.
- How often do wearable rankings update?
- When new products get scored on import, when firmware/sensor updates materially change a device's performance, or when new validation studies are published. Every score carries a last-scored timestamp on the product page.
