The phrase appears on skincare, wearables, supplements, sleep products, cosmetic devices, and virtually everything in between. It sounds like a certification. It sounds like the product has been reviewed by medical authorities.
It has not been. "Medical grade" has no regulatory definition. The FDA does not use the term. The FTC does not certify it. There is no independent standard for what constitutes medical-grade anything in most product categories. The phrase is pure marketing decoration, and it is one of the most reliable red flags in wellness product listings.

What "medical grade" doesn't mean
Let's start with the absences.
- The FDA does not certify products as "medical grade." The FDA classifies medical devices into Class I, II, or III based on risk, and clears them via 510(k) or approves them via PMA. There is no "grade" category.
- ISO 13485 is a quality management system standard for medical device manufacturers. "Made in an ISO 13485 facility" is meaningful. "Medical grade" is not.
- USP has grades for certain pharmaceutical materials (pharmaceutical grade, reagent grade, technical grade), but these are specific and narrow. "Medical grade" is not a USP designation.
- The AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation) publishes standards for specific device categories. Compliance with an AAMI standard is meaningful. "Medical grade" without a specific AAMI standard cited is not.
What actually happens: a marketing team decides that "medical grade" sounds better than "regular" and puts the phrase in the copy. The FDA does not police the term because it is not a specific medical claim. The FTC has occasionally taken action when the term is used to imply something specific that turns out to be false, but the enforcement bar is high.
The narrow cases where "medical grade" has some meaning
1. Medical grade silicone
Silicone comes in various grades. "Medical grade" silicone typically refers to material that has passed USP Class VI biocompatibility testing — a specific series of tests for cytotoxicity, hemolysis, and implant reaction. This is a real standard, and materials that meet it are used in medical implants, catheters, and long-term contact devices.
The phrase "medical grade silicone" on a menstrual cup, an anti-snoring device, or a nasal dilator is claiming compliance with this standard. Some products actually comply. Others use the phrase without any underlying certification.
How to verify: look for a specific citation. "USP Class VI certified silicone" is meaningful. "Medical grade silicone" without any citation is not.
2. Medical grade stainless steel
Stainless steel used in medical implants and surgical instruments is typically 316L or 316LVM — specific alloys with defined composition, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. "Medical grade stainless steel" often refers to these alloys.
How to verify: the product spec should cite the specific alloy (316L, 316LVM, titanium Ti-6Al-4V ELI for implants). If the alloy is not specified, the phrase is decoration.
3. Medical grade skincare / dermatology
The phrase in skincare is essentially meaningless. "Medical grade" skincare is often defined by the industry as products sold through medical spas or dermatology offices rather than at retail. There is no ingredient standard, no potency standard, and no clinical requirement. The phrase distinguishes distribution channel, not efficacy.
Some "medical grade" skincare brands (SkinCeuticals, Skinbetter, Alastin, ZO Skin Health, Obagi) have decent underlying formulations and reasonable dermatology-community reputation. The reputation is doing the work, not the phrase.
4. Medical grade oxygen
Actual medical grade oxygen — the kind delivered in hospitals — is regulated by the FDA under USP standards, with purity, moisture, and hydrocarbon limits. Commercial welding oxygen is chemically similar but does not meet the medical grade specification. The distinction matters for patient safety in respiratory therapy.
How to verify: USP standard compliance and specific supplier certification. "Medical grade" on the tank is meaningful when it references the USP specification.
5. Medical grade adhesive
Adhesives used in skin-contact medical devices (wound dressings, CGM sensors, monitor electrodes) are typically classified as "medical grade adhesive" meeting specific biocompatibility standards for skin contact. This is a meaningful distinction — industrial adhesives are not skin-safe.
The categories where "medical grade" is pure decoration
Now for the areas where the phrase carries essentially no information.
1. Medical grade LED therapy
LEDs are LEDs. There is no medical grade LED specification. What matters for photobiomodulation devices is wavelength (nm), irradiance (mW/cm²), and total dose (J/cm²). None of these are captured by the phrase "medical grade."
A device page claiming "medical grade LED therapy" with no cited wavelengths or irradiance values is using the phrase as a substitute for actual specifications. Look for the numbers. If the numbers aren't there, the phrase is empty.
2. Medical grade compression
Compression garments (socks, sleeves) are classified by pressure in mmHg — 15-20 mmHg is mild support, 20-30 is medical compression, 30-40 is firm medical compression. Real medical compression has a specific pressure range for a specific indication (venous insufficiency, lymphedema, DVT prevention).
"Medical grade compression" without a cited mmHg range is marketing. Compression at 15-20 mmHg (which is mild) can still be labeled "medical grade" by the manufacturer and it's not technically wrong — but it's much less clinically useful than 20-30 mmHg for most indications.
3. Medical grade wearables
Wearables making "medical grade" claims are almost always in one of two categories: legitimate FDA-cleared devices that also happen to describe themselves as medical grade (Withings ScanWatch, Apple Watch), or generic Amazon devices using the phrase to imply clearance they don't have.

The rejected receipts include multiple "medical grade" facial devices from various beauty brands. The Valmont Eye Regenerating Mask Treatment, at score 25, uses "medical grade" language without any underlying clearance. The pattern is universal in the beauty-adjacent category — the phrase is a substitute for actual regulatory documentation.
What to look for instead of "medical grade"
Here is the checklist that separates real regulatory backing from decorative language.
- Specific FDA 510(k) number. For medical devices, this is the gold standard. Verifiable in the FDA database.
- Specific standards compliance. ISO 13485 for manufacturing quality, IEC 60601 for medical electrical safety, USP Class VI for biocompatibility, AAMI/ESH/BHS for blood pressure monitor validation, ANSI/ISEA for eye protection. Cited standards mean the product has been tested against a defined benchmark.
- Specific material grades. 316L stainless, USP Class VI silicone, medical-grade adhesive with an underlying compound specification.
- Third-party test reports. Independent lab testing published on the product page, ideally in PDF form with the lab name.
- Named manufacturer with a real corporate identity. Not a Shopify storefront. A company with manufacturing capability and regulatory experience.
The real certifications by device category
For quick reference, here's what to look for in specific categories.
Blood pressure monitors
Look for AAMI, ESH, or BHS validation. These are the recognized clinical validation protocols. "Medical grade" without a validation citation is meaningless. Real cleared BP monitors like the Omron 10 Series (score 84, Verified) publish this specifically.
Red light therapy devices
Look for FDA 510(k) clearance, wavelength in nm, irradiance in mW/cm², and treatment distance. The Lumara VISO (score 82, Verified) is one of the few in Vyvata's catalog that publishes all of this.
Wearables
Look for specific FDA clearance numbers for the specific medical claims. Withings ScanWatch 2 has 510(k) for AFib detection. Apple Watch has 510(k) for ECG. Anything else marketed as "medical grade" without a citation is not medical grade.
CGMs
Look for FDA clearance and MARD (Mean Absolute Relative Difference) accuracy specification. Real CGMs like the Dexcom Stelo (score 91, Elite) publish MARD data. Fake "non-invasive glucose watches" do not.
Sauna and heat therapy
Look for UL, ETL, or CE electrical safety certifications. EMF testing data. Manufacturer identity. The rejected receipts have multiple "medical grade" saunas that failed on Powered Device Without Electrical Certification — the phrase does not substitute for a UL listing.
Supplements
Look for USP verified, NSF certified, or Informed Sport certified marks. These are independent third-party quality certifications. "Pharmaceutical grade" or "medical grade" without one of these citations is decorative.
How marketing teams use the phrase
From a marketing perspective, "medical grade" is doing several jobs at once:
- It implies regulatory backing without making a specific claim that can be fact-checked.
- It differentiates a consumer product from the (unmentioned) commodity version.
- It positions the product as premium and justifies a higher price.
- It exploits the consumer heuristic that "medical" = "trustworthy" without triggering the more skeptical "FDA-approved" heuristic.
The phrase is popular precisely because it does all of this while being legally difficult to challenge. The FDA cannot sanction a company for using a phrase that has no regulatory definition. The FTC would need to prove that the phrase deceived consumers in a specific measurable way. Meanwhile, the phrase moves product.
The one-line translator
Any time you see "medical grade" on a product page, translate it as: "The manufacturer would like you to think this product has been reviewed by medical authorities. It has not, unless a specific standard or clearance number is cited alongside."
Then look for the specific standard or clearance. If it's there, you have a real claim. If it's not, the phrase is decoration.
The bigger point
Regulatory language is one of the most reliable levers in wellness marketing, and "medical grade" is one of the most reliable phrases within it. Learning to translate the phrase in real time is one of the highest-leverage reading skills for anyone who buys health-adjacent products with any regularity.
