You buy a supplement. The label says it contains a specific ingredient at a specific dose, and you assume that's what you're getting. Sometimes it is. Often it isn't. The rules governing supplement labels are permissive enough that a manufacturer can technically list ingredients while hiding the actual per-ingredient dose, and consumer-friendly enough on the surface that most buyers never realize what they're missing.
This post is the field guide to reading a supplement label the way a pharmacist reads one. Where the dose actually is. What proprietary blends conceal. Which forms of a compound matter versus which don't. The tricks that legally comply with disclosure requirements while obscuring what's in the bottle.
By the end of this you should be able to look at a supplement bottle and know within 30 seconds whether it's giving you what you're paying for.
The two panels every supplement has
Every US supplement label has two required sections: the Supplement Facts panel and the ingredient list. These are regulated by the FDA under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994.
The Supplement Facts panel
The regulated nutritional-facts-style table. Lists serving size, servings per container, and the amount of each labeled ingredient per serving. This is where the doses are supposed to live.
Look at any Thorne or Pure Encapsulations product. Each ingredient has an amount and a %DV (Daily Value) where established. "Magnesium (as magnesium bisglycinate) — 200mg (50% DV)." That's the honest format. Compare to a product with a proprietary blend that lists "Recovery Matrix — 1,500mg" with no per-ingredient breakdown. Same label format, dramatically different transparency.
The Other Ingredients list
Below the Supplement Facts panel. Lists inactive components: fillers, binders, capsule material, flow agents. This is where preservatives and excipients are declared. Not usually the site of tricks, but worth checking — some brands use magnesium stearate, others use rice extract; some use gelatin capsules, others vegetarian.
The proprietary blend trick
The most common trick in supplement labeling. A proprietary blend is a listed ingredient that is actually multiple ingredients grouped together, with only the total weight disclosed. Example:
Immune Support Blend — 1,200mg
Elderberry extract, echinacea root, quercetin, vitamin C, zinc, mushroom complex
You know the total weight of the blend. You do not know how much of each ingredient you're actually getting. The manufacturer can put 1,190mg of the cheapest ingredient and 2mg each of the five others, and the label is technically accurate.
This matters because ingredient efficacy is dose-dependent. Quercetin has some evidence at 500-1000mg/day. If your "Immune Support Blend" contains 20mg of quercetin, you are not getting the effective dose. But the label doesn't tell you that.
The FDA allows proprietary blends because the manufacturer can argue that the specific ratio is a trade secret worth protecting. In practice, the trade secret is usually "we put in a lot of the cheapest thing and traces of the marketing ingredients."
How to spot a proprietary blend
Any ingredient in the Supplement Facts panel followed by "blend," "complex," "matrix," "formula," or "proprietary" is a proprietary blend. Sub-ingredients listed without individual doses beneath a total weight are proprietary blends. If you cannot answer "how much of ingredient X is in this product," the blend is proprietary.
What to do about them
Skip them. There is essentially never a reason to buy a proprietary blend when a similar honest formulation exists. If you want the ingredients in the blend, buy them individually and dose them explicitly. This is more work, but you actually know what you're taking.
The form-of-compound trick
Vitamins and minerals come in different chemical forms. The forms have very different absorption rates, bioavailability, and effective doses. A supplement can list "Magnesium 400mg" and mean either a well-absorbed form or a poorly-absorbed form, and legally the label is the same.
Magnesium
- Magnesium glycinate / bisglycinate — well-absorbed, gentle on the gut, evidence for sleep. This is the form for supplementation.
- Magnesium citrate — well-absorbed, mildly laxative. Fine for constipation but usually not what you want for chronic supplementation.
- Magnesium malate — moderately absorbed, some evidence for muscle pain.
- Magnesium threonate — the form marketed for cognitive benefits; some early evidence. Expensive.
- Magnesium oxide — poorly absorbed (10-15% bioavailability). Used in low-quality supplements because it's cheap. The "400mg magnesium" is mostly not getting into your system.
A supplement listing "400mg elemental magnesium (from magnesium oxide)" is technically providing 400mg of magnesium but delivering perhaps 40-60mg to your bloodstream. Compare to 400mg magnesium glycinate providing something like 240-320mg absorbed. Same label number, very different physiology.
Iron
- Ferrous sulfate — the standard treatment form. Effective for correcting deficiency but often causes GI upset.
- Ferrous bisglycinate / iron bisglycinate — better tolerated, similar bioavailability. Preferred for chronic supplementation.
- Carbonyl iron — slower absorption, better tolerated.
- Ferric ammonium citrate — less well-absorbed.
Vitamin B12
- Methylcobalamin — the active form, no methylation required.
- Adenosylcobalamin — also active.
- Cyanocobalamin — the standard cheap form, must be converted to the active forms in the body. Some people (with MTHFR variants) convert less efficiently.
- Hydroxocobalamin — the injectable clinical form.
Folate / folic acid
- L-methylfolate — the active form. Especially important for people with MTHFR variants.
- Folic acid — the synthetic precursor that must be converted. Works for most people but may accumulate as unmetabolized folic acid at high doses.
The pattern is universal. Vitamins and minerals have multiple forms with different absorption characteristics. The label often obscures this by listing the elemental amount without specifying the form, or by listing the form in a way that's easy to miss. Look for the form. If it's not disclosed, the supplement isn't disclosing enough.
The unit-conversion trick
Vitamin D is measured in IU (International Units) or micrograms (mcg). A supplement can list 2,000 IU or 50 mcg — same thing — but a shopper comparing labels may miss that the 5,000 IU product actually contains 125 mcg vitamin D3, which is more than the RDA and worth being careful with.
Vitamin A is complicated: it can be listed in IU, mcg RAE (retinol activity equivalents), or the older mcg equivalent. Different forms have different biological activities.
Vitamin E is similarly complicated: natural d-alpha-tocopherol has different activity than synthetic dl-alpha-tocopherol. Some labels list one, some list the other, some list mixed tocopherols.
The trick is that consumers usually compare labels by the number without noticing the unit or form. A supplement listing "800 IU vitamin E" from synthetic dl-alpha-tocopherol delivers less biological effect than 400 IU natural d-alpha-tocopherol.
The percentage-DV misdirection
The %DV (Daily Value) column shows the ingredient amount as a percentage of the FDA-established daily reference intake. It sounds like a clinical recommendation. It is not. Daily Values were established based on RDAs, which are the minimum amounts to prevent deficiency in most healthy people. They are not optimal supplementation doses for any specific benefit.
A vitamin D supplement listing "500% DV" sounds impressive. In this case, it may just be 100 mcg (4,000 IU), which is a reasonable daily supplementation dose for many people. But the %DV framing implies excess when it may not be.
Conversely, a magnesium supplement listing "25% DV" sounds inadequate. It may be 100mg magnesium glycinate, which is a low but reasonable starting dose. The %DV doesn't map cleanly to whether the supplement is dosed appropriately for a specific goal.
Use the mg or mcg amount for evaluation. Ignore the %DV column except as a sanity check that you're not accidentally massively over-dosing.
The third-party testing question
Beyond the label, the critical question is whether the label matches the bottle contents. Multiple independent tests over the years have shown that a significant percentage of supplements on the US market contain either less than the labeled amount, more than the labeled amount, or in some cases entirely different compounds.
Third-party testing programs verify that the label matches the contents. The three main programs:
- USP Verified — the gold standard. Products carrying the USP Verified mark have been tested for identity, potency, purity, and dissolution. USP publishes the list of verified products, so it's easy to check.
- NSF Certified — similar rigor. NSF tests for identity, potency, and contaminants. NSF Sport is a subset that also tests for banned substances for athletes.
- Informed Sport / Informed Choice — tests each batch for banned substances. Popular in the athletic supplement space.
Brands like Thorne, Pure Encapsulations, Klaire Labs, and Nordic Naturals maintain multiple certifications and publish per-lot COAs. This is what "transparent" actually looks like in the supplement space. The contrast: honest labels versus rejected labels
Compare the label practice of a Verified-tier supplement brand to the rejected receipts in the catalog.
Verified pattern: brand-name manufacturer with an ISO 13485 or FDA-registered facility. USP or NSF certification cited on the bottle. Per-ingredient dose disclosure with specific forms named (e.g., "Vitamin C as ascorbic acid — 500mg"). No proprietary blends. Recommended dose and contraindications published. Manufacturer contact information available.
Rejected pattern: unbranded or vendor-name-only manufacturer. No third-party certification. Proprietary blends dominating the Supplement Facts panel. Forms of compounds unspecified. Marketing claims that overreach into medical territory. No manufacturer contact information beyond a Shopify support email.
The Heartfelt Tea for Blood Pressure in the rejected receipts, at score 30, is an example — a hibiscus/bilberry/cinnamon/rose herbal blend marketed as "Healthy Blood Pressure Support" without dose disclosure or drug clearance. The pattern is clear.
The 30-second label evaluation
Here is the checklist to run on any supplement label in about 30 seconds.
- Are there proprietary blends? If yes, walk away or lower your expectation of the product significantly.
- Are the forms of key compounds specified? Magnesium as glycinate, B12 as methylcobalamin, folate as L-methylfolate. If the form is unspecified, the product is using the cheap form.
- Do the doses match the effective ranges from clinical research? A supplement listing 50mg of quercetin is subtherapeutic. A supplement listing 500mg of the same ingredient is in the evidence range.
- Is there third-party certification? USP, NSF, Informed Sport — the mark should appear on the bottle.
- Is the manufacturer named and accessible? Not just the brand — the actual manufacturer with a facility address or FDA registration number.
- Are the marketing claims proportional? "Supports healthy immune function" is legal structure-function language. "Cures autoimmune disease" is illegal disease claim territory.
A product passing all six is worth buying. A product failing three or more is not worth the money regardless of price.
The bigger point
The supplement industry is one of the least regulated in consumer wellness. The label rules exist to make the products look transparent while allowing significant obfuscation of the actual doses. Learning to read the label past the surface presentation is one of the highest-leverage skills for anyone who spends money on supplements with any regularity.

The next time you pick up a supplement bottle, spend 30 seconds on this checklist. You will find that most of the supplements you were considering fail on at least half. A few will pass on all six. Those are the ones worth buying. The rest are marketing.
